Please be aware that all volunteers and interns are required to have obtained fingerprint clearance, undergone live scan procedures, and completed tuberculosis and immunization screenings prior to commencing their involvement with our program. These prerequisites ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and are mandatory for participation.

Child Development Intern

The intern works with the teachers to provide a warm and loving atmosphere for children ages 2 to 5. Teachers and interns work together to support the academic and social development of children in the Early Childhood Development Program. Interns must be able to work in a team setting, with patience, enthusiasm, passion and respect for children.

Nutrition Intern

Under the supervision of a registered dietitian, the intern will learn about the role of a dietitian in a community setting. Intern will have an opportunity to develop resources, conduct parent workshops, and help with nutritional assessments.

Family Advocate Intern

For volunteers and interns pursuing undergraduate degrees in child development, family studies, social work, and other human service related fields. Interns can learn how to engage families, develop goals with families and how to support families with referrals and connecting them to the community.

Family Service Certificate (FSC) Program

Parent volunteers who completed the prerequisite hours will be invited to participate in the Family Service Certificate program. Family Service Certificate allows parents to learn the necessary skills to become a Family Advocate.

Mental Health Student Intern (BA level)

Interns are undergraduates pursuing majors in psychology, social work, human services and related fields. The intern learns about Head Start and community based Mental Health support services and resources. They have an opportunity to assist our Mental Health Program Assistants and Marriage and Family Therapists.

Mental Health – Marriage and Family Therapist Student Trainee (Master Level)

Interns are master level students pursuing their marriage and family therapy degree. Under the supervision of a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and working to receive their CA State Board hours for licensure, they provide Mental Health Services and Consultation to our Head Start children and families including individual, group or parent focused support. Additionally, they provide Mental Health Services to our staff regarding social-emotional learning in the classroom and classroom focused consultations.

Occupational Therapy Student Intern (Doctoral Level)

Interns are doctoral level students pursuing their Occupational Therapy degree. They provide various forms of education, resources and support to children, families and staff. Some examples include, providing ergonomic practices within the workplace, sensory stimulation to support infant and early childhood development, maternal mental health, strategies for children with disabilities and special needs and importance of sensory processing with staff and parents. While they complete their community internship, they create a portfolio of solid resources for VOALA that help enhance our services.
